CHICAGO SINFONIETTA UPDATE: For our Audience Matters program, in an effort to not only sustain student participation, but to significantly increase their active participation and interaction with the music, this year the Sinfonietta has incorporated cross-curriculum ties into visual arts and creative writing, promoting cultural literacy. We have asked teachers from each school to incorporate a creative writing component based on Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings, performed during this year’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Tribute concert. The students have used their language and writing skills to create a story out of their experience of this music. The Sinfonietta has also asked the teachers to incorporate a visual art component into their curriculum, providing students the opportunity to visually depict their experience of this evocative piece. These activities provide an outlet for active and creative involvement for the students and enhance their experience of classical music.
The Chicago Sinfonietta is very pleased to present a selection of some of the best creative writing pieces (see enclosed sheet) we received through the Audience Matters program. We will also feature many more creative pieces, both written and visual, on our website, as well as student reactions to Adagio for Strings. We thank all of the students for their meaningful participation and congratulate them on their success!
