INTRODUCING St. Barb’s
TRACK / Running TEAM!
Hello, The coaching staff of St. Barbara’s track/running team is Rich Slehofer (387-9229) and Michelle Handley (630 810-5188) and Dan O’Connell (387-1228). Track and field is a richly unique sport that promotes both individual performance and team chemistry. We have a motto, “everyone gets better, and everyone has fun.” If you are ready to go, our first practice is Tuesday, March 25 at 5:30 at the RB high school track. This information is very helpful for parents and guardians who want more information about the program.
As we have learned from prior seasons, volunteers are very much welcomed and needed. Volunteers will allow us to devote more time to athletes specializing in shot put and long jump and will help keep the field safe. Trust me, I've learned. Many volunteers are needed at track meets. Please let the coaches know your level of interest. Also, let us know your ideas and suggestions as we realize the program is still very new.
We have also learned from prior years the need to make practices enjoyable. For the most part we will practice 4 days a week but promote the idea of running most every day, especially if you miss practice. A person's strength and endurance diminishes with more than 3 days of inactivity. The practice on selected Sundays is called, “fun runs.” We will run in the bike trail north of the zoo and we encourage family members to join. In place of running, consider biking or roller-blading. Music players are allowed except during coaches’ instructions.
What you should expect of the coaches and volunteers:
We will plan and conduct practices that teach the sport, challenge the athletes, and build their strength and running stamina.
We will encourage the athletes to train up to their individual ability.
We will have a copy of release forms and a cell phone with me at practices (708-638-8732).
We will remain at the practice sites until every athlete meets their parent or appointed contact.
We will maintain our motto of “everyone gets better, and everyone has fun.”
What we expect from the athletes:
We are charging a fee of $25 ($40 if you need a team t-shirt). It pays for awards, track
meet fees, and equipment. It would not pay for optional 5K race fees in May and June.
We expect the athlete to check-in with the coach as practice begins.
We expect athletes to respect their teammates, their opponents and the fields we use.
We encourage the athletes to do some form of running or similar exercise on or surrounding a missed practice.
We expect extra care when using shot puts.
What track athletes need to know:
Bring comfortable running attire to practice and meets including outerwear for cool weather. Consider rain gear and a bag to keep clothes and shoes dry. Don’t eat a full meal less than 2 hours before practice or meets. Snacks of PBJ, fruit or grain bars are good. Avoid acidic fruits or any other snack that might upset you before practice or a meet. Bring a water bottle or Gatorade to practice. Keep the skate board at home.
